SYDNEY - A sawn-off rifle has been recovered from a property in Sydney's south where three men were shot early today, police say.
Police said a 27-year-old man inside the home, in Gray St at Kogarah, kept negotiators at bay for more than three hours before he was arrested.
Superintendent Peter McErlain told reporters the shooting happened at 12.25am (2.25am NZT), moments after the trio, all aged 22, knocked on the man's door.
"The purpose of the visit is unknown but shortly after knocking on the front door, the occupant opened fire on them," Supt McErlain said.
"Of the six to eight rounds, three actually struck each one of the victims - they were extremely lucky."
The three men were each shot in the upper body but survived and are being treated in St George Hospital.
Supt McErlain said police had since searched the house and recovered a shortened .22 calibre semi-automatic weapon.
Police cordoned off the property moments after reports of the shooting and police negotiators began talking with the man inside.
"About 3.40am (5.40am NZT), a 27-year-old male person, we believe the occupant of the premises, was arrested a short distance away," Supt McErlain said.
Police were preparing to charge the man with offences including attempted murder and shooting with intent to murder.
He is expected to appear in court later today.
