SYDNEY - Greyhound Go Bronco, found suffering heat exhaustion in a stolen car in Sydney on the weekend, has died.
The A$10,000 ($11,486) white and fawn dog was found close to death on Sunday in the back of the car which was dumped in Boyce Street, Glebe.
After running seventh in race five at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, Go Bronco's trainer had stopped to pick up some dinner at Glebe, leaving the dog in his car.
Thieves then stole the Holden Commodore station wagon - with Go Bronco inside.
A tip-off shortly before midday on Sunday led police to the car, in which the caged greyhound was found distressed and lying limp from heat exposure and dehydration.
Despite treatment from veterinary professionals, the two-and-a-half-year-old dog died last night.
"It's not good news unfortunately, he died last night about five o'clock," Annandale Animal Hospital vet Gwilym Hunt told AAP.
"We had him on pain relief, we didn't select to euthanase him, but the clotting was the problem, with clots going right through his body, his brain and organs."
Go Bronco arrived at the animal hospital on Sunday "half dead" Mr Gwilym said, with a temperature of 43deg celsius, well above the normal range of 37.8 degrees to 39.2 degrees.
Police continue to investigate the car theft.
