A cull of about 140 eastern grey kangaroos at Bathurst's Mt Panorama racetrack has raised the ire of environmentalists and the New South Wales Greens, who say it is an inhumane solution to a perceived safety problem.
Bathurst Regional Council authorised the cull, saying it was needed to ensure the safety of drivers and visitors during the Bathurst 1000 car race, held in the central NSW town.
Angry NSW Green MP Lee Rhiannon likened the unpublicised cull to "using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut".
She said many of the kangaroos would have had a joey "at foot and one in the pouch" at this time of year.
