ATHENS, Greece (AP) Greek authorities say they have made a record seizure of a dangerous synthetic drug that has become increasingly popular with impoverished addicts amid the country's financial crisis.
A police statement says two Romanian men were arrested at Athens Airport Tuesday with 12 kilograms (26 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine hidden in their luggage the largest quantity ever found in Greece.
The highly addictive drug, locally known as Sisa, is used by Greece's worst-off drug users as a very cheap alternative to heroin.
Announcing the arrests Wednesday, police said the suspects took delivery of the drugs in Kenya, and had been planning to hand them over to an African man in Athens.
They gave no estimate of the consignment's street value.
