A great white shark is responsible for the attack on a young woman north of Newcastle, says a biologist who has studied her life jacket and wounds.
Lisa Mondy, 24 was waiting for a boat to pick her up after coming off her wakeboard at Jimmys Beach, Port Stephens, when the shark struck on Wednesday.
It grabbed her face and dragged her under water.
Mondy remains in a stable condition at John Hunter Hospital with severe injuries to her head, shoulder, neck and left arm.
Investigators from the state Government's Shark Attack Response Plan team have studied the bite marks on the young woman's life jacket and photos of her wounds.
They released a statement saying a great white was responsible for the attack.
