TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) A Libyan security official says a government official has been gunned down in the center of the eastern city of Benghazi.
Mohammed Osman Akoush, head of the city's civil records office, was killed Friday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his car in al-Sabri district as he left a restaurant, the official said.
The body of Akoush, 34, was taken to al-Jalaa hospital, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
Benghazi has witnessed a series of assassinations and car bombings in recent months.
Most recently, an American teacher was gunned down earlier this month. The birthplace of the uprising, Benghazi is a stronghold of powerful Islamist militias formed after the eight-month civil war that toppled longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
