Moscow police say a gunman has wounded Vyacheslav Ivankov, whom United States prosecutors called a godfather of Russian organised crime.
Ivankov was taken to the hospital with an abdominal wound after he was shot, possibly by a sniper, coming out of a cafe in a north Moscow suburb.
Ivankov served a jail term in Russia, then moved to the US where he was convicted in 1995 of trying to extort millions from an investment firm run by Russian emigres in New York.
He was extradited to Russia in 2004 on murder charges and acquitted.
