She had been up since 4.45am preparing to present a posy to the Queen - and Maisie Gregory carried out her task with great aplomb and a perfect curtsey.
But seconds later the six-year-old got the shock of her life after being accidentally struck by a soldier.
As the Queen walked away, posy in hand, the private saluted - and video footage clearly captures the 'thwack' of his gloved hand hitting the little girl with no small force, as well as her indignant 'ow' when it does.
To add insult to injury the blow was strong enough to send Maisie's little stovepipe black bonnet flying off her head, leaving her glaring at the soldier.
Onlookers said he was 'mortified', but fortunately there was no harm done.
