Hailstones the size of lemons have been reported in Melbourne's west as the weather bureau forecasts very dangerous thunderstorms to strike Melbourne later on Christmas Day.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Claire Yeo says parts of Melbourne face flash-flooding along with large hailstones as the bad weather crosses the city.
She says people have phoned the bureau reporting hailstones 4cm in diameter hitting Melton, on Melbourne's western fringes.
The bureau has forecast very dangerous thunderstorms around Melbourne Airport and surrounding suburbs with severe thunderstorms in other parts of the city being accompanied by destructive winds, very heavy rainfall and hail, and flash flooding.
But the storms are expected to pass during the night and Ms Yeo says finer conditions will prevail for the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India at the MCG.
