BERLIN (AP) Federal prosecutors say they have charged a 31-year-old German man with belonging to a terrorist organization that fought international and government troops in Afghanistan.
Prosecutors said in a statement Monday that Josef D., whose last name wasn't given in accordance with German privacy laws, is accused of being a member of the so-called German Taliban Mujahedeen. He was arrested in April after his return to Germany from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border area.
Prosecutors say he traveled to the region to join up with the group in 2009 "to fight armed jihad," but left sometime after April 2010 when many of its leaders were killed. They say he traveled through Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan to make his way home.
