Fiji coup leader George Speight has been back before the courts in Suva this morning, as his lawyers attempted to have treason charges against him dismissed.
The defence argued that the charges appeared to ignore the amnesty granted to Speight in return for the release of deposed Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and his government, who were taken hostage on May 19.
However, Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo has remanded Speight and 16 of his supporters for another 10 days, and they were taken back to their prison island.
There were few supporters outside the Suva Magistrate's Court today, in stark contrast to previous appearances by Speight.
