KEY POINTS:
WASHINGTON - The United States Army officially censured a retired three-star general for lying about the 2004 friendly fire death of Army Ranger and former football star Pat Tillman in Afghanistan.
The Army also reprimanded six other senior officers, including three generals, for critical mistakes in the handling of the Tillman case but found no evidence of a deliberate cover-up by the military.
The Army singled out for official censure retired Lieutenant General Philip Kensinger, head of Army Special Operations Command, saying he deceived Army investigators, made false statements and failed in his duty to inform the Tillman family about the nature of the soldier's death. He has been referred to a review board for possible demotion.
"General Kensinger was the captain of that ship, and his ship ran aground," Army Secretary Pete Geren said.
