CHINA - A gas explosion at a Chinese coal pit in the northeast Jilin province is known to have killed 74 miners and the toll is expected to rise.
It is another in a grimly predictable series of disasters in the world's deadliest mining industry, in which 2700 died in the first half of this year. A string of recent accidents has made a mockery of safety campaigns.
