There is real danger Islamic extremist groups such as al Qaeda and Hizbollah could form alliances with powerful Latin American drug lords to launch terrorist attacks, United States officials said.
Extremist group operatives have been identified in several Latin American countries.
But Charles Allen, chief of Homeland Security Department, said they could use established smuggling routes and drug profits to bring people or even weapons to the US.
