KEY POINTS:
Australian Peter Foster has been released from a Fiji hospital and taken into police custody for questioning on fraud allegations.
The 44-year-old walked out of Suva's Colonial Memorial Hospital yesterday escorted by two police officers.
He was then taken in handcuffs to police headquarters, where he was expected to be questioned about allegations of fraud.
He had been in hospital since gashing his head during his arrest on October 25. Police say he cut his head on a propeller when he dived into a river to evade arrest, but Foster says police assaulted him.
His injury is now the subject of an internal police investigation.
"I was bashed on the head by a policeman, he should be charged with attempted murder," he told media gathered outside the hospital yesterday.
Foster, who abandoned a hunger strike at the weekend, had a scar on his forehead.
He is suspected of involvement in an alleged fraud against a Micronesian bank, as well as immigration fraud and a plot to discredit a New Zealander developing a resort in Fiji, but claims he was set up.
"I think that's obvious isn't it," he said. "This is a country crippled with corruption, corruption is a cancer in this country, everybody's seen it. We've now seen people in high places denying their involvement with me but in the fullness of time all will be revealed."
When asked if he was a conman, he said: "There's been more lies told about me by others ..."
