SYDNEY - Three generations of women from the same family were among five people killed in a horrific head-on collision in northern NSW.
Police today confirmed four women and a man were killed when a sedan and a truck collided, 10km north of Boggabri, about 4.15pm (6.15pm NZT) yesterday.
They included a woman, aged 70, of Rooty Hill in Sydney's west, her two daughters, aged 44 and 47, also of Rooty Hill and her 21-year-old granddaughter.
The young woman's 22-year-old boyfriend, from Penrith, also died, police said.
Both vehicles burst into flames on impact, but the truck driver escaped unhurt.
Police said the car, which was towing a trailer, veered onto the wrong side of the road while heading south along the Kamilaroi Highway, before colliding head on with the furniture truck travelling in the opposite direction.
Both vehicles burst into flames and all four women and one man travelling in the car died, police said.
The Kamilaroi Highway has been re-opened after being closed for most of the night.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
