NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) A doctor says former Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has been admitted to a private clinic in a "very grave" condition.
Dr. Joseph Kasios, the politician's personal physician, said Thursday that the 94-year-old Clerides is being treated at Evangelistria clinic in Nicosia, and that his age and past health problems are contributing to his critical condition.
Clerides, who served as the fourth president of Cyprus, is widely respected for deftly navigating this Mediterranean island's often chaotic politics.
After two unsuccessful campaigns in 1983 and 1988, Clerides was elected president of Cyprus in 1993, winning back-to-back elections to hold the post for 10 years.
During that time he led Cyprus into the European Union as a member nation.
