The five countries that ring the Arctic - Canada, Denmark (with Greenland), Norway, Russia and the United States - will meet in the northern Norwegian town of Tromsoe on Wednesday to discuss how to safeguard the polar bear.
"No sea ice equates to no polar bears. It's really that simple," said Geoff York, a polar bear expert with environmental group WWF.
Arctic sea ice is disappearing rapidly, and some say it could melt completely during the summer months by 2020.
