In the latest twist to the bizarre tale of Bobby Fischer, the chessmaster has decided to marry a Japanese woman he has lived with since 2000.
Fischer was detained at Tokyo's Narita Airport last month when he tried to leave for Manila on a passport United States officials say was invalid. The chess grandmaster has been wanted in the US since 1992, when he violated sanctions by going to Yugoslavia.
Fischer is to marry Miyoko Watai, acting head of the Japan Chess Association. It was not clear if he would be allowed to while in detention, or whether marriage to a Japanese national would enable him to avoid deportation.
