KEY POINTS:
Fiji will review the military's role in public life as part of a bid to end the country's notorious "coup culture", the leader of the latest takeover has indicated.
Military chief Voreqe Bainimarama, who toppled elected Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase in December 2006, suggested setting up a working group to address the issue. "As the current head of Fiji's military, I am very much aware of the concerns regarding what is now being widely described as 'coup culture' in Fiji," he told a council helping draft a "people's charter" on Wednesday.
"Fiji must rid itself of this reputation, and for us to be able to do this, we must address the fundamental problems and issues." Commodore Bainimarama's coup was the fourth since 1987 with the armed forces taking a direct role in each one.
