A Fijian resort remains closed and all the guests have been evacuated after a spectacular blaze yesterday. The fire started in the 'Kids Club' at the Naviti Resort in Fiji at about 3pm yesterday. Guests and staff were evacuated to safety as firefighters contained the blaze, finally getting the fire under control at 2am this morning. Most of the guests and staff were relocated to Naviti's nearby sister property, The Warwick Fiji Resort & Spa. The fire destroyed the central building containing the main lounge, restaurants, shops and offices, although the accommodation blocks were saved. A huge fire has ripped through a Fijian resort popular with New Zealanders.

Fire officials said nobody was injured in the blaze at the Naviti Resort yesterday.

The fire started in a children's facility about 3pm and spread throughout the main building which contained restaurants, shops, a lounge and offices, FijiVillage.com reported.

National Fire Authority chief executive John O'Connor said firefighters had the blaze under control last night and had left the scene by 2am.

Firefighters were able to save the accommodation blocks, he said.

It is understood the resort was at 85 per cent capacity including many New Zealanders and Australians.

The guests were moved on to Naviti's sister resort, the Warwick Resort, a few minutes up the road.

The resort on the Coral Coast of Fiji's largest island, Viti Levu, is popular with New Zealand families.

Naviti Resort said on its website that it was "a sad day'' but it was most important that everybody was safe.

"Firemen have successfully contained the fire and nobody has been injured in this tragic incident.''

The resort remains closed and an investigation is underway.
