KEY POINTS:
Fiji's military regime has appointed a new police commissioner to replace the acting chief who took over when Australian Andrew Hughes was sacked from the post.
The military announced it had sacked Mr Hughes on December 7 - two days after military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama ousted the elected Government in a bloodless coup.
Mr Hughes was on leave in Australia at the time, after police investigations into Commodore Bainimarama and other military officers attracted threats against him.
Before the coup, Commodore Bainimarama was being investigated for allegedly seditious comments directed at the Government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.
After sacking Mr Hughes, Commodore Bainimarama handed the interim police job to Lieutenant Colonel Jimi Koroi - an elderly, wheelchair-bound former policeman.
Yesterday it emerged Colonel Koroi had been permanently replaced by another former police officer, Romanu Tikotikoca, who has in the past served with the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands.
