A 52-year-old Michigan man complained only about the cold weather before walking into a diner with a 12cm knife sticking out of his chest.
The man called an emergency operator to ask that an ambulance be sent to the eatery.
He said he had been stabbed during a robbery attempt a kilometre away, then walked to the restaurant.
A restaurant employee said the man calmly ordered coffee.
Police said yesterday he was recovering.
