KEY POINTS:
BRISBANE - A father ran from the wrecked car in which his two-year-old son died and his partner and baby son were trapped on the Gold Coast last night, police say.
The 25-year-old man was seen running from the wreck as his 23-year-old partner screamed from the front passenger seat of the Holden Commodore, witnesses told The Courier-Mail newspaper.
The car reportedly fishtailed as it travelled west along Cotlew Street East, in Southport, before crashing and overturning up to four times around 6.30pm.
Fire crews had to rip its roof off to remove the children.
Police Inspector Paul Ziebarth said the driver presented himself to the Gold Coast Hospital about 7.30pm, an hour after the crash.
"At this stage we understand he's the father of the children," Insp Ziebarth said.
"It's very hard to understand why the driver would run away from the scene in these circumstances."
Insp Ziebarth said the road was well lit and dry at the time of the crash.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
