A fake pope Twitter account which started amassing thousands of followers as soon as Jorge Bergoglio was ordained has been suspended.
The account @JMBergoglio, which carries a bio that says "Perhaps I commit the sin of humility by saying that I am a simple representative of God on Earth just as God is mine in Heaven. I and God bless you!", had roughly 3,200 followers at the time of Jorge Bergoglio's ordination.
Half an hour later, the account had 52,715 followers, reaching the 100,000 mark not long after.
The handle, which showed a location of Buenos Aires and a photo of Bergoglio had obviously fooled many followers, who flooded the page with congratulations.
The account was confirmed to be false when Twitter responded to an email from The LA Times, saying the handle "is not the new pope's account. You can follow the real pope at twitter.com/pontifex."
