KEY POINTS:
ADELAIDE - The heat is back on in South Australia with temperatures forecast to surge back into the 40s over the next two days.
The extreme conditions, with Adelaide tipped to have 43C today, have sparked renewed fears for public safety and concerns for transport services and power supplies. The weather bureau said Adelaide would also have a 41C day tomorrow before a cooler change would drop the temperature back to the mid-20s for Sunday.
The extreme heat followed the city sweltering through six consecutive days above 40C last week from Tuesday to Sunday.
Over the past two days conditions moderated slightly, the maximums dropping back to the low 30s.
With the return of severe weather the State Emergency Service urged people to take care.
"Although we are living in Australia, and we do expect hot weather during summer, this heatwave has had an enormous impact on people, particularly the elderly and other vulnerable groups," said SES chief officer Stuart Macleod.
As Adelaide sweltered last week there was a spike in the number of sudden deaths, filling the city's morgue to near capacity.
