Arriving in the world the size of a 6-month-old, 6.28kg newborn Chelsea Rose Mackay is an extra big bundle of joy for her mother Danielle, the Townsville Bulletin reports.
She is believed to be the biggest baby ever born at Townsville Hospital and one of the largest in Australia.
At 55cm in length, Chelsea measures up at twice the size of an average baby and almost 5 times the size of her hospital room-mate, Melinda Burns.
The Townsville Bulletin says Melinda was born prematurely at 818g but is now a month old and weighs just 1.2kg.
The average newborn New Zealander weighs 3.5kg for boys and 3.2kg for girls.
The largest baby born in New Zealand is understood to have been born in Auckland to a Tongan couple in 2005 weighing 6.63kg.
That is dwarfed by the Guinness record holder for the heaviest baby born to a healthy mother - a boy weighing 10.2kg, born to Carmelina Fedele in Italy in September 1955.
