European cars have scored high marks in the latest crash test results.
Releasing the latest European tests today, the Australian New Car Assessment Programme said four of the five small cars tested and three of the four medium cars scored five stars.
Top marks for small models went to the Renault Scenic, the Opel Astra, BMW 1 Series and the Volkswagen Golf.
The only small car to score four stars was a version of the Opel Astra not fitted with head protection airbags.
Among the medium cars the best were the Citroen C5, the Peugeot 407 and the Audi A6, while the BMW 5 Series scored four stars.
All the cars tested are currently available on the Australian market.
Crash test spokesman Phil Allan said the latest tests showed the importance of head protection airbags for front and rear passengers to reduce the risk of head injuries.
