Jay Presson Allen, who adapted novels for stage and screen in an era when few women did, has died at her home in Manhattan after suffering a stroke. She was 84. She is credited with bringing out the best in actresses such as Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith and Liza Minnelli.
