CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) Witnesses say clashes between government and opposition supporters have closed down a major market in Guinea's capital as residents in the West African nation lined up to collect their voter cards for next week's legislative election.
Resident Lancine Camara said the incident Monday near the Madina
market in Conakry began with a dispute between two men that quickly escalated. Similar clashes were also reported in the city's Bambeto neighborhood.
For nearly three years, Guinea has been paralyzed by quarrels between the opposition and the ruling party over the much-delayed Sept. 24 election. In recent weeks, opposition leaders have voiced concerns about the integrity of the voter registration list, threatening to organize protests unless a corrected list was published by Wednesday.
Police said Monday's clashes did not result in any injuries.
