1. Two out of three black boxes have been recovered from the site of the German train crash which happened last night at Bad Aibling in Bavaria, killing 10. The head-on collision also injured dozens and about 9 are in critical condition. Both drivers were killed, The investigation is focusing on whether the cab signalling system, which is meant to trigger an alarm if two trains are on the same stretch of track, was working.

2. Early voting in three small New Hampshire towns has taken place in the US state's presidential primary. The polls don't close until 1pm NZT. So far Bernie Sanders is leading Democratic rival Hillary Clinton by 60.7 to 32.1 per cent. On the Republican side Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich are all on 24.3 per cent.

3. US intelligence chief James Clapper says in an assessment that North Korea could soon have enough plutonium for a nuclear weapon after restarting one of its reactors. He said it also had taken steps towards making an intercontinental ballistic missile system.

4. The Guardian reports that two tennis umpires have secretly been banned over a gambling scam. Four others face bans over allegedly conspiring with betting sydicates to cheat odds. The Guardian says umpires are alleged to have taken bribes to manipulate live scores on the International Tennis Federation's Futures Tour.

5. Guns, car crashes and drugs cut US male life expectancy by a year compared with men in other high-income countries, according to research by the Centres for Disease Control.

6. A man died after setting himself alight outside Kensington Palace, the London home of Prince William and Kate.

7. Italian authorities have dismantled a mafia business group belonging to the Moccia clan headed by a woman known as the Black Widow of the Camorra. Based in Afragola on the outskirts of Naples, it has been headed since the 1970s by Anna Mazza, the first woman to be convicted of mafia association in Italy, AFP reports.

8. The Daily Telegraph reports that a possible 'yeti' has been caught on camera at a Spanish ski resort. A video of a furry figure at Formigal in the Pyrenees has emerged. The shaky, grainy footage appears to show a large shaggy white figure walking upright between trees.
