CAIRO (AP) An international humanitarian organization says one of its employees has been deported from Egypt, where he had come to present officials with a petition bearing over a million signatures asking for the lifting of death sentences against 529 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
Wissam Tarif, a Lebanese national who works for Avaaz, an online activism network, arrived in the country Tuesday morning and was deported that evening, spokesman Sam Barratt said Friday
A court sentenced the 529 to death on March 24 for an attack on a police station that killed a policeman, raising an outcry from rights activists. Tarif had intended to present the petition to Egypt's top Islamic official, the mufti, who must issue an advisory on the death sentences.
