Earthquake strikes Vanuatu

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu today, seismologists said, but there was no tsunami warning or reports of damage on the tiny Pacific island.

The earthquake, which was measured around 18km deep, was centred 155km from Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, according to the USGS.

A 7.2 earthquake hit the archipelago, which is situated between Fiji and Australia, last month, prompting a brief tsunami alert.

Vanuatu sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" known for its seismic and volcanic volatility owing to friction between giant, moving plates in the earth's crust.
