Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says he would like other East Asian countries to sign up to a new greenhouse emissions pact which rivals the Kyoto Protocol.
Australia joined the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and India last week in signing the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, which commits the countries to developing and sharing clean technology.
Mr Downer said he hoped other Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) members would also come on board.
