Donald Trump has said he will hire Elon Musk to save the US money by cutting government costs if he wins the November election.
Musk, who runs Tesla and SpaceX, revealed in August that he had suggested the idea of a commission to Trump and said that he would be interested in serving on it.
During a speech on Thursday to the New York Economic Club, Trump said: “At the suggestion of Elon Musk ... I will create a government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for drastic reforms.
“We need to do it – we can’t go on the way we are now. And Elon, because he’s not very busy, has agreed to head that task force. It’ll be interesting – if he has the time. He’ll be a good one to do it.”
Responding to earlier reports that Trump was poised to endorse the idea, Musk had written on his social media platform X: “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”
