SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) The Dominican Republic is for the first time exporting white yams to New York as part of a program to help struggling farmers in the Caribbean country.
The government said in a statement Saturday that the government had awarded nearly $300,000 to an association of farmers in the northeast coastal town of Samana for the project. Farmers are expected to harvest some 2.5 million square meters (27 million sq. feet) of land.
The government said the program is expected to directly benefit nearly 850 producers. Officials noted that the Dominican Republic already began exporting white yams to Canada.
