SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) Police in the Dominican Republic have arrested a former legislator they say accidentally shot and killed a Haitian man while trying to protect him from being assaulted by two men.
Police say attorney Agnes Contreras Valenzuela fired a licensed shotgun at the two suspects but also hit and killed the unidentified Haitian man. One of the suspected assailants was injured and arrested when he sought medical care. The other suspect, a 15-year-old boy, was later arrested.
Contreras has not been charged and is scheduled to appear Saturday before a magistrate.
Police said Contreras told them she was standing in her home's doorway on Thursday waiting for her sons to arrive when she saw the two suspects assaulting the man and decided to take action.
