A man is fighting for his life and his dog is dead after they were stabbed in their Adelaide home by intruders.
Police are seeking a motive for the attack by four men, armed with baseball bats and a knife, who forced their way into the house in Davoren Park.
Police say the injured man and his partner were woken by the sounds of the front door being forced about 2am CST on Tuesday.
The four men, who were wearing stockings on their heads, stabbed and hit the man then threatened his partner, demanding money and drugs, before they left, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Crameri said.
"During the incident the victim's dog, a Staffordshire terrier, was also stabbed and was subsequently euthanised after receiving treatment from the local vet," the detective said.
