SYDNEY - Police divers will today search a Sydney pond where the body of small boy was found stuffed inside a travel bag floating on the water.
Children playing by the large pond in a suburban park at Rosemeadow, in Sydney's south-west, fished the bag out of the water yesterday afternoon, police say.
They opened the bag and found what they thought was a pig, but after turning it over with sticks they discovered it was a human body partly wrapped in plastic.
Police believe the body to be that of a young boy aged between five and ten years old.
Early reports suggested the bag was first noticed floating in the pond a few days ago, police said.
The park is surrounded by houses and is a popular recreation area for walking and cycling, attracting visitors from other suburbs.
Homicide Squad and Forensic Services Group officers will return to the secured crime scene this morning along with members of the Police Diving Unit.
