KEY POINTS:
Eight amateur divers were rescued yesterday after floating for nearly 40 hours off southern Taiwan when currents carried them 80km away from their diving spot.
Their instructor swam to shore in Taitung county late on Sunday night and gave authorities directions to help to pinpoint their search.
The instructor said he split the divers into two groups and told them to stay together while waiting for rescuers.
