Veteran US swimmer Diana Nyad edged towards Florida as she fought fatigue and jellyfish stings on her third attempt to cross the Florida Straits from Cuba without a shark cage.
After 28 hours in the water, the 62-year-old had covered about a third of the 166km distance and the 50-member crew accompanying her said she was "very comfortable".
In another swimming feat, Frenchman Philippe Croizon, who lacks legs and arms, has successfully swum the frigid waters separating Alaska and Russia with the aid of paddle-like prosthetics.
Croizon, whose limbs were amputated after a 1994 electrical accident at age 26, completed his swim at the weekend.
Croizon has completed crossings of the English Channel, the Red Sea and other major waterways.
