DAKAR, Senegal (AP) A second arrest warrant for the son of former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has gone into effect, meaning he can remain behind bars for six more months on charges of illicit enrichment.
Karim Wade, a former minister in his father's government, was arrested in April following a months-long investigation into how he amassed a fortune of more than $1.3 billion.
The original arrest warrant was due to expire on Thursday, meaning prosecutors needed to obtain another one in order to keep him jailed pending trial.
Abdoulaye Wade was voted out of office in 2012. His son is the most high-profile of several officials in his government to be charged with illicit enrichment.
El-Hadji Amadou Sall, a lawyer defending Karim Wade, said Thursday that that the case was "purely political."
