LONDON - Tourists who stayed at the Portuguese resort where 4-year-old Madeleine McCann was abducted have been urged to hand over any holiday photographs which might contain clues to her kidnapper.
British police said they wanted pictures from anyone who had been at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz or the surrounding area in the two weeks before her Madeleine's disappearance on May 3.
Photos should be uploaded to a special website www.madeleine.ceopupload.com .
"Look at your prints and see if there are, for instance, people in the background of the picture that at first you may not have noticed," said Jim Gamble, Chief Executive of the police Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).
"These are the pictures we want," he added.
"By taking in pictures from the public we can move the investigation forward -- looking for people who might seem out of place or behaving strangely."
Gamble said detectives would use advanced facial recognition software to scan the pictures and pass on any useful information to Portuguese police.
An email "chain letter" including a photo of Madeleine is being circulated around Europe in the hope that someone might recognise her.
The email's author, identifying himself as Madeleine's uncle, said media interest in the case was waning. He said he was concerned that his niece might now be in a country where there was no coverage of her abduction and she might go unnoticed.
Meanwhile, Madeleine's father Gerry McCann flew home to England on Monday for the first time since she went missing. He is expected to return to Portugal on Tuesday.
A video appealing for help in finding Madeleine was screened at the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United on Saturday.
So far, one suspect has been identified by police -- a 33-year-old who lives in the area -- but his name has not been made public and he has not been charged.
Text of email:
Please forward to everybody across Europe you know.
Keep passing this on.... As you are aware my niece is still missing and I am asking everyone I know to send this as a chain letter i.e. you send it to everyone you know and ask them to do the same, as the story is only being covered in Britain, Eire and Portugal.
We don't believe that she is in Portugal any more and need to get her picture and the story across Europe as quickly as possible.
Suggestions are welcome.
Phil McCann
PS: Madeleine has a noticeable (and eye catching) birth defect in her right eye pupil - not obvious in this picture. It looks like the black of her pupil has run into the rest of her eye - like a tear drop.
