WARSAW, Poland (AP) An expert says a dead whale was found on a Baltic Sea beach in Poland, a rare occurrence in a country far from the region where they normally roam.
Krzysztof Skora, the head of a station studying sea life, said Saturday the body of a young male weighing about 3 tons was found Friday night near the town of Mielno.
He says it is likely a northern bottlenose whale. Their territory is in the North Atlantic, but sometimes they venture elsewhere because they "must be explorers by nature."
Scientists are waiting for special shipyard equipment to lift and transport the whale to do a necropsy.
A bottlenose whale was found in the Thames in London in 2006 and in the Danish straits in 2010. They did not survive.
