WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (AP) A man found dead in his jail cell in Curacao has a connection to the slaying of an opposition lawmaker.
The Justice Ministry says in a statement that Luigi Florentina appears to have hanged himself at the Barber police station. The 27-year-old was suspected of killing a suspect in the slaying of lawmaker Herman Wiels.
The man Florentina was accused of killing was one of two men suspected of gunning down Wiels at a beach and then fleeing in a car.
An autopsy of Florentina was scheduled for Monday to confirm the cause of death. He had recently been moved from a military barracks.
Wiels was leader of the Sovereign People Party and his slaying shocked many in the southern Caribbean island. Another suspect in the slaying is in custody.
