DOUALA, Cameroon (AP) Cameroon's defense ministry says unidentified gunmen killed one soldier and a civilian after crossing into the country from neighboring Central African Republic.
A statement issued Sunday signed by Defense Minister Alain Edgar Mebe Ngo'o said the attack occurred late Saturday in the town of Biti, and that five assailants were killed during the ensuing skirmish with Cameroonian soldiers. Several other attackers were injured and one was taken prisoner.
The border region has been tense since the Seleka rebel coalition overthrew Central African Republic's government in March, installing their leader as president. Residents on the Cameroon side complain of regular cross-border raids.
In August, Cameroon shut down one border crossing after soldiers from Central African Republic's army killed a police official during a dispute in the Cameroonian border town of Toktoyo.
