KEY POINTS:
The Irwin family is spending the first anniversary of Steve Irwin's death today at a private location in the United States.
It was a year ago today that a stingray fatally speared its barb into the 44-year-old crocodile hunter's chest while he was making a documentary film near Port Douglas.
Irwin's widow, Terri, says the anniversary will be a quiet, private day but a celebration of his life will be held on November the 15, which will be known as Steve Irwin Day.
Special events will be held at Irwin's Australia Zoo in Queensland.
The Irwin children, Bindi aged nine and three-year-old Bob were taken to America last week.
