MELBOURNE - A husband and wife were assaulted by about eight occupants of a Hummer vehicle as they stood admiring it in inner-Melbourne early today.
Police said the man, 30, and his 32-year-old wife were admiring a silver-coloured Hummer vehicle in a secure carpark on Flinders Lane, between Spencer and King streets, about 5am (7am NZT) when they were set upon.
"The occupants of the Hummer took offence to this and approximately eight occupants got out of the car and assaulted the couple," police said.
"The husband was assaulted by the driver with a crowbar, and was knocked unconscious for a period of time.
"He lost a lot of blood at the scene and has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital."
Police said the wife was also taken to hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.
The driver of the Hummer is described as aged in his 30s, caucasian, wearing dark jeans, a black T-shirt and has a tattoo of a cross on his right forearm.
A second offender was of Asian appearance and wearing a green T-shirt.
