KINSHASA, Congo (AP) President Joseph Kabila announced the Congolese state will repatriate the remains of ex-dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, who is buried in Morocco.
Mobutu, who ruled the country for 31 years, was chased from power in 1997 by Kabila's father, a rebel leader. Ailing from cancer, the elderly Mobutu failed to organize a proper defense, and was forced to flee in disarray on an Antonov plane to neighboring Togo, where witnesses said they saw the first lady emerge in her nightgown. During his time in power he is accused of having amassed billions of dollars.
The younger Kabila made the pronouncement on Wednesday during a speech in front of parliament. He also said that the remains of ex-Prime Minister Moise Tshombe would be repatriated from Algeria, where he died in 1969.
