Four years after leaving the White House, former United States President Bill Clinton and his wife have paid off the last of millions of dollars in legal fees stemming largely from his impeachment and a probe of their Whitewater land deal, records released yesterday showed.
The annual financial disclosure statement for 2004 also showed that the former President received nearly a US$1 million ($1.4 million) in speaking fees and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York earned more than US$2 million in book royalties last year.
"They are both pleased it's been paid," Jim Kennedy, a spokesman for the former President, said of the legal bills that reached the millions during Clinton's eight-year presidency.
